Do I Have Gout?

Gout is a common type of arthritis that affects millions of Americans today. It’s a disease whose history dates back to Henry VIII.

Gout can cause severe pain, swelling, and stiffness in joints but is most commonly found in the big toe. Symptoms of this common disease include intense joint pain that will subside to inflammation and redness. Areas to look for gout include your big toe, ankle, knee, wrist, elbow, and finger. It is important to note that an attack of Gout usually occurs at night.

Testing for Gout:

When testing for Gout there are three procedures that can be done. The first is a joint fluid test where a needle extracts fluid to be observed for signs of urate crystals. The second procedure is a blood test to measure the levels of uric acid in the blood. It is important to note that people with high levels of uric acid do not necessarily experience Gout. On the flip side, one can experience Gout without having increased levels of uric acid. Thirdly, a CT scan can help us determine if there are urate crystals around the joints.
